The Pursuit of Happiness

Chris walked into the office building, tired from the long three and a half mile run from the police station. Sweat dripped down his back. He wore a dingy tank top and a denim jacket covered in white paint. He looked all around him and saw that people were staring at him. Everyone had on his or her suit jacket and slacks, and nice penny loafers on. This made Chris feel very unconfident.

As he approached the glass conference room, he saw inside four business men, who would be conducting his interview. He already knew one of the men from a previous encounter. His name was Jay. When he entered the room, he could not help but notice the way the men were staring at him. Especially one man who had a look of discrimination plastered across his face. Even his close friend Jay looked at him strangely. All of these other times, Chris had a suit and tie on, but today it was unfortunate that the circumstances had led to him coming in so badly dressed.

Chris took his seat and gave his long explanation as to why he looked the way he did. As he talked he could see the men’s facial expressions wanting to ask, “You can’t be serious can you ? Do you really think you will be considered ?”

But Chris said some important things in his statement that made the men take him seriously. He made mention of the fact that he was the type of person, that if you asked him something, he would tell you the answer. But if you asked him something and he didn’t know the answer, he would be sure to find the answer and bring it back to you.

When he finished, one of the men asked Chris if he was the one conducting this interview,
and a man came in dressed as he, and he hired him, what would he say.

Showing his humor, he said, “he must have had on some really nice pants”.
